The Origins of Widows Sons Mercia Grand Chapter
A Legacy of Brotherhood
To All to Whom These Presents Shall Come, Greetings: Be it known that the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association, founded upon the enduring principles of Freemasonry — Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth — traces its origin to the eighteenth day of February in the Year of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-Eight. On that day, Brother Carl A. Davenport, Past Master, moved by fraternal affection and charitable purpose, did establish the first chapter of the Widows Sons in Schiller Park, Illinois, United States of America, thereby uniting Freemasons who shared a passion for motorcycling with a solemn commitment to fellowship, charity, and service to the widows and orphans of departed brethren. From these humble beginnings, the Association grew in strength and number, spreading beyond the borders of its birthplace to lands across Europe, the United Kingdom, and throughout the world. Chapters were formed wherever Master Masons sought companionship upon the road and unity within the Craft, creating bonds of brotherhood that transcended nation, language, and culture. Through dedication, perseverance, and fidelity to Masonic principles, the Widows Sons flourished into an international fraternity recognised for its charitable works, its support of Blue Lodges, and its visible demonstration of Freemasonry in action within the wider community. And Whereas, the growth of the Order within the British Isles gave rise to new jurisdictions and opportunities for expansion; And Whereas, the brethren of Mercia, united in purpose and harmony, sought to establish a Grand Chapter to govern and promote the aims of the Widows Sons within their region; Now Therefore, on the Sixteenth Day of August in the Year Two Thousand and Twenty-Five, under the authority of Caledonia Grand Chapter and auspices of Kilwinning Abbey, Mercia Grand Chapter was duly and solemnly chartered. This historic and memorable ceremony was conducted within the ancient and venerable walls of the Abbey, a site deeply revered in Masonic tradition and symbolic of the enduring heritage of the Craft. The chartering of Mercia Grand Chapter stands as a testament to the vision first set forth in 1998 — that Freemasons joined in brotherhood, charity, and fellowship may accomplish great works together. Let it therefore be proclaimed that from the founding by Brother Carl Davenport to the establishment of Mercia Grand Chapter, the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association continues to thrive as a worldwide fraternity of honourable men, bound not only by their love of the Craft but by the open road that unites them. May this brotherhood ever flourish. May its charity never fail. May its fellowship endure through generations yet to come.
